With technology, regulation, and most importantly... humanity.
The interpretation that John brings up is that of the matrix & terminator films, in a similar context that I bring up and how we connected on another level.
One that brings forth a great mission & vision... for the future.
Here goes that interpretation:
"In a potential dystopian future, 10-15 years from now, where technology and artificial intelligence have overrun our planet, Chairman Bowdre and I found ourselves alongside John Connor... a potential savior of humanity.
We embarked on a daring journey to the past to ensure the proper trajectory for the world, leaving Connor in today's timeline as we go back into the future.
Three months later, we returned to check on John's progress, only to find him buried in office work and daily obligations. We asked John Connor what he was doing, and he seemed to be back to material and worldly endeavors, almost as if he had forgotten the mission at hand.
We had to remind him that the future... was at stake."
This is a very similar story to humanity today, so heavily delved into automated & mundane tasks. Almost as slaves to a system that we support, instead of thriving, loving, and enjoying the greatest of our creations and loved ones.
It is not that we don't do this...

Many people appose Crypto regulation BUT with regulation comes security.
