Doğan Erkal was born in Mersin, Türkiye in 1978. After completing his primary and secondary education in Mersin, he began his medical education at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1995, graduating in 2002. In 2010, he received training in general surgery and advanced laparoscopy at İzmir Atatürk Training and Research Hospital and completed his general surgery specialization. He has worked as a general surgeon and also as an obesity surgeon in many public and private healthcare institutions.
