Era James, born in Lafayette, Louisiana, had a challenging childhood in Baton Rouge’s projects. Due to an abusive relationship with his father, his mother moved him and his four brothers to Alief, Houston, Texas, for a fresh start. Era’s passion for music began early, excelling in classical music with the violin and French horn. He was placed in advanced classes in the sixth grade.
However, poverty and peer pressure led him down a difficult path, resulting in time spent from ages 17 to 26 in and out of jails and prisons.
