But SIXTEEN eggs from our hens! WOW!
We have 18 hens and one rooster, and over the last several months have averaged from three to ten eggs a day. But never more than 12.
So why the boost in egg production?
Chickens + short winter days = egg break! 🐔
🌞 They need more daylight, not warmth, to lay eggs. Less light, fewer eggs!
Now that the days are getting longer our girls are giving us all the goods.
16 of 18 is the MOST eggs we’ve ever gotten in a day.. hip hip hooray!

We have two mulberry trees, this tiny one, and one much larger. My plan of attack is to harvest daily, wash, and freeze them. Then when I have enough…make jam!

11That’s right, 5.5 weeks of chickee dust in my home is quite enough for me! Today our chicks moved out of the house and into their new home.
Since they arrived as day old chicks they went from a large Tupperware brooder, to a big Amazon box, to a box-o-minimum multi room suite (more Amazon boxes 😆) to this final large indoor/outdoor brooder pen. They will live here as they get acclimated to the larger hens and we can integrate the flock.
Baby chicks take about 6 weeks to become fully feathered and be able to regulate their temperature. If you live in a colder climate (we are in Florida) then you should definitely keep them protected from the elements for the full six weeks. We felt comfortable moving them outside with a small heater for this last week.
They are a bit disgruntled from the move (like any unruly tenant!) but they’ll get used to their new cushy home real quick! 🐥 🐓 🏠

Mulberry season is here!
