There are three key reasons why people might fake suicide:
1. In order to gain a reward of some type (for example, attention, blame shift)
2. With the hopes of avoiding a negative consequence (for example, a jail sentence truth exposing)
3. As a symptom of another mental health disorder
4. In other words, many people who fake suicide, do so because they want something: either a benefit or to avoid a negative situation. But there are also people with legitimate mental health issues who fake suicide to gain attention.
