Botox is a neurotoxin. It is used in medicine and cosmetic treatments to temporarily reduce or eliminate the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by paralyzing the underlying muscles. Here’s how it works:
• Neurotransmitter Inhibition: Botox works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter, at the neuromuscular junction. Acetylcholine is responsible for transmitting signals from nerve cells to muscle cells, causing muscle contractions. When Botox is injected into the targeted muscles, it prevents the release of acetylcholine, effectively interrupting the communication between nerves and muscles.
• Muscle Relaxation: With acetylcholine blocked, the muscles in the injected area become temporarily relaxed and unable to contract. This relaxation leads to a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Botox is most commonly used in areas of the face, such as the forehead, frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines), and crow’s feet around the eyes.
We love all of our neurotoxins: botox, dysport, & xeomin!
