While conducting shark tagging research off the coast of Florida, we experienced an unexpected catch. a sawfish took one of our baits. Upon closer inspection, we discovered the sawfish had commercial fishing lines wrapped around its rostrum, causing significant injury. We were able to carefully and efficiently remove all hooks and leaders from the fish, ensuring minimal harm. Afterward, we safely released the sawfish back into the water and promptly reported the incident to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) for further documentation and monitoring.
