✅💵Cap Space: Most teams do not have cap space. Most teams are in the “Positive Tax” range. When a team is a cap space team they want to make sure to start free agency with a lot of of it because the only signing exception a cap space team has is the room exception. The room exception is valued at around $8M in 2024-25. A team with cap space would like to have a lot of it, and you can use cap space freely until you have none left (assuming cap holds are renounced after).
✅💵Between Cap and Tax: In the positive zone of the salary cap. In this zone a team has access to the Non-Tax Midlevel exception and the bi-annual exception. The non-tax midlevel exception in 2024-25 is $12.8M and the bi-annual exception is $4.7M. Most NBA Teams are in this space.
✅💵Between Tax and 1st Apron: Still in the positive, but very close to the 1st Apron
Hard Cap: Teams are hard capped if they do a sign and trade, use their non-tax mle, or use their bi-annual exception (BIE). Hard cap means a team cannot cross the 1st apron if it is triggered. There’s also triggers to be hard capped at the 2nd apron.
Ex. Mavs completed a sign and trade for Klay Thompson and can’t exceed the 1st apron
