Decisions matter.

Decisions you make ripple throughout your life, waiting for you to learn from those decisions.

Decisions politicians make ripple the same way, waiting for us to learn to make more informed choices.

In 1979, President Jimmy Cater (left) agreed to allow $500,000 taxpayer dollars to fund freedom fighters in Afghanistan.

Those freedom fighters were defending against Russian influence and an eventual invasion.

Funding the mujahideen became American policy through President Reagan and President George H.W. Bush's administrations.

Reagan even had the freedom fighters at the White House (second picture).

Billions of your dollars.

22 years later, Al Qaeda struck.

Osama bin Laden was technically not funded by the US, but he benefited from training and war tactics.

The Taliban, which now runs Afghanistan, also is rooted in the mujahideen.

We can't undo what's already been done. So blame doesn't matter. The only option is to learn.

Learn about who is making these decisions and what impact they have had. In the 44 years since Carter's decision, we live in a divided country that doesn't trust our government.

The truth is uncomfortable because we, as voters, play a role. We have the ultimate power to decide who is going to make these decision.

22 years after 9/11 it's important to look back at the 22 years leading up to 9/11 and what choices were made in the 22 years since.

Communication is crucial to any relationship.

Your communication skills will help you stand out, especially if your presentations knock people's socks off.

Improve your communication skills by:

Focusing first on your internal communication.

How do you talk to yourself? How do you motivate yourself? How does your negative self-talk show up?

Awareness is step one.

Become aware of how your emotions impact what you say and how you say it. Understand you are always in control. Sometimes it is best to say nothing.

Next, focus on how well you listen to others. We live in a world with constant distractions. Become aware of what distracts you (phone, wandering mind, noises).

Listening is information gathering, especially in a negotiation. You gather information by asking excellent questions.

For almost 30 years I've been a radio broadcaster, solely relying on my voice to share ideas. I had to learn how to share those ideas effectively so I could help my stations increase ratings & revenue.
