1 Construction
I lightly sketch in the main structural landmarks of the face to help me as guidelines. I look for the brow line, the bottom of the nose and the centre-line.
2 Shadow shapes
I squint at the reference to help make shadow shapes more obvious. I try to recreate these shapes in my drawing.
3 I
Block in
I fill the shadow shapes in by hatching with charcoal.
4 Boundaries
V
I darken the boundaries of the shadow shapes. I ensure that cast shadows have hard edges and form shadows have soft edges.
5 Refinements
I make small adjustments and add darkest accents.
