These photos were taken moments after Demi handed over her crown as Miss Universe. I flew in from halfway around the world and it was the first time I got to attend a Miss Universe competition. I was so grateful for the opportunity to learn and to see all the effort that Demi put in. Her year as Miss Universe was an incredible, life-changing experience, one she and I will always be grateful for, but especially for me because it’s when we started dating.
But this night was different. It was hard not just for her, but for me too. After she handed over the crown, so much changed. The entire support system she grew close to during her year, had to immediately transition to helping the next winner. The entire life she knew for the last year, and the one she had worked so hard for was gone in a flash.
As the reality hit her, I could see on her face and hear in her tone, she was starting to question who she really was without the title of Miss Universe or Miss South Africa. She was beginning to realize that a major part of her identity was placed in the crown and title, and maybe she let that title and label define who she was - something that I’ve done far too often my whole life! She wasn’t sure what was next.
In the months following, I could see her heart stirring and God working, helping her realize there was so much more

They say a picture is worth a thousands words… just a brief story I want to share with y’all…

IG Fam, each day may not run as smoothly as we would like, but it’s always an opportunity to grow, learn, serve, teach and love. Seize the day!
