In these days, Earth is experiencing one of the most intense CME-driven geomagnetic storms recorded since 2003.
The event began when the Sun released a powerful coronal mass ejection (CME), a massive cloud of magnetized plasma expelled from the solar corona following strong solar activity.
As this CME reached Earth, it interacted with our planet’s magnetosphere, compressing it and triggering large-scale disturbances in Earth’s magnetic field.
This interaction is what defines a geomagnetic storm.
When the magnetic orientation of the CME couples efficiently with Earth’s magnetic field, energy is transferred into the magnetosphere, driving charged particles toward the polar regions.
These particles collide with atoms and molecules in the upper atmosphere, exciting oxygen and nitrogen and producing auroras that can extend to unusually low latitudes during intense storms.
This is why auroras are currently being observed far beyond their typical polar locations.
Alongside the geomagnetic storm, elevated levels of solar energetic particles have also been detected, corresponding to a solar radiation storm.
While this radiation storm mainly affects satellites, astronauts, and high-latitude aviation, the visible auroras are primarily caused by the geomagnetic disturbance driven by the CME.
Events of this magnitude are rare and provide valuable opportunities to study Sun

When massive stars die, they explode as supernovae, enriching the universe with elements like carbon and iron.
But when two neutron stars collide, a rarer and more powerful event occurs. A kilonova.
🧪 Supernova vs kilonova
• Supernovae mark the death of massive stars
• Kilonovae happen when two neutron stars merge
• These mergers forge the heaviest elements, including gold and uranium
• Such elements become the building blocks of planets and life
🌌 A historic reference
So far, only one kilonova has been confirmed with certainty.
In 2017, the event known as GW170817 was detected through both gravitational waves and light.
It was observed by LIGO, Virgo, and dozens of telescopes worldwide.
For the first time, spacetime itself was seen to ripple from a stellar collision.
🔭 A new and puzzling candidate
Astronomers have now reported evidence for a second possible kilonova, named AT2025ulz.
But this event is far more complex.
It appears to have been preceded by a supernova explosion just hours earlier.
✨ Why this is extraordinary
For the first three days, AT2025ulz behaved exactly like a classic kilonova.
Then its signal shifted, resembling a supernova instead.
This suggests a never-before-seen phenomenon.
A superkilonova, a kilonova triggered by a supernova.
📡 What comes next
If confirmed, this would be the first observation of its kind.
