Sebastian Telfair

SLAM turns 30 this year, so we’re documenting the 30 players who have helped us become who we are. Next up is Sebastian Telfair. Though his NBA stats won’t impress the uninitiated, Bassy deeply inspired a generation of people who made SLAM and who read it. His connection with us runs all the way back to 2002’s SLAM 62. He also had two more covers and was our high school diarist while he attended Lincoln in Coney Island, Brooklyn. Movie cameras followed him while he was at Lincoln, capturing now historic footage of him destroying the nation’s top talent, hanging with Jay-Z and LeBron James and making the decision to go straight to the League. Through The Fire, the documentary that followed, has become a basketball artifact, a recording of a star burning at its very brightest, so bright that its warmth became fuel for every kid that watched it. Bassy had the charisma of both Hov and Bron, the on-court arsenal of the best point guard in the country and an impact on the game that very few ever have had.
